Shamrock
|
Shamrock originally belonged to a family in Marion, Wisconsin who had a large population of animals (more than 15) on their property. HEA assisted this family in getting their animals spayed and neutered. Shamrock is as high-spirited today as she was in her younger years! Not much has changed for this dear gal over the years. After her owners passed away unexpectedly, Shamrock and her brother, Sport, came to live with us. They roomed together, and she always made him feel safe and secure in their new home. When Sport passed away a few years back, Shamrock naturally stepped into the role of hospice caretaker. She will devotedly guard any animal in her protective ward. Although she’s wary of most humans, Shamrock adores her “patients.” Shamrock provides the elderly dogs in our care with a constant source of love and affection. She visibly grieves the loss when one crosses the Rainbow Bridge, but she happily dotes upon the next.
If guests proceed slowly and speak softly to her, Shamrock may accept an occasional pet. She is very protective of her roommates, however. She’ll even sound the alarm (bark loudly) when someone gets too close. She needs to trust that her canine companions will be treated with the same tender care that she provides. Next year, Shamrock will turn 20 years old. She recently surprised us by beginning to carry around a toy, proving that "old dogs can learn new tricks!"
The Sanctuary is a haven for dogs like Shamrock, who were never able to form a close bond with humans. But she has a life that’s so worth living – she blossoms in the company of other dogs. Shamrock takes her role of HEA Hospice Caretaker extremely seriously and we’re indebted to this sweet, protective pup for all the comfort she’s given our aging companions. We’re thankful for generous Sponsors that support our mission at the Sanctuary. And we’re thankful to have a Sanctuary that provides an old gal’s life with purpose. Some might say Shamrock is lucky to have HEA. While that may be true, we’re quite fortunate to know the soul of a dog so special.
